Esther Rowe-Towle was up first in the Under 17 Girls race. Following on from the win at the Yorkshire Championships at the beginning of January Esther went in to this race in great shape. A much tougher task here with a very strong field entered. The plan again was to go of hard and push on from the start to try and split the field up. Esther did exactly this and soon found herself at the front with one of the best cross country runners in the country from last winter and the two opened up a big gap on the chasing group. An excellent second half of the race saw Esther come away with the silver medal 8 seconds behind the winner and a very impressive 27 seconds in front of the bronze medal winner. Esther still has next year in this age group and is now looking really good for the English Schools Championships later on in the year where she will be top end of the age group.
Next up was the Under 13 Boys – Zak Ferguson has struggled the last month with an injury but seems to have got over this in the last 10 days so wanted to give it ago here and hopefully give himself a chance of been picked for the London mini marathon team. Running a very sensible race in the group just behind the leading pack of 4. The last couple of hundred metres Zak looked to be struggling a little with a big pack chasing him down but dug in and found an extra gear to hold them of and pass a few other runners to finish a very impressive 8th place and was the first Yorkshire runner home. Will Platts who again like the Yorkshires stepped up an age group to finish a very creditable 51st place with still another 2 years in this age group. Watch out for Will over the next few years. George Wallace again ran a sensible race working his way through the field after a conservative start and finished in 100th place out of the 201 runners that finished.
Next race was the Under 15 Girls – Annie Naylor who missed the Yorkshire’s at the beginning of the month though illness wasn’t going to run here until the morning of the race as she had been of school last week also. A steady start for Annie in what was a very fast start from the field. Annie didn’t panic and worked her way through the field to finish in 19th place. We know a fit Annie would have been challenging for the medals with the results from the start of the cross country season. Annie was 3rd Yorkshire runner home so like Zak a good run at the English Schools should give Annie a chance of been picked for the London Mini Marathon team. Polly Platts had a solid run although was a little disappointed afterwards finished in 66th place out of the 196 runners. Again like Annie Polly has next year in this age group and will come back much stronger.
Under 15 Boys – First year Jamie Rhodes who has managed to string together 3 weeks of training and is getting stronger every week and this showed here beating several runners that beat him at the Yorkshire Championships. Jamie finished 97th out of the 201 runners that finished. Now on to the South Yorkshire Schools Championships next weekend which will hopefully see Jamie qualify for the English Schools Championships later on in the year.
Unfortunately Cyane had to pull out quite early on in the Under 20 ladies race with a calf problem …. Well done everyone great results in some very strong fields.
