This has always been a favourite for Team Russell with the likes of Natalia Hackett, Emily Simpson, Ana Garcia, Mariella De Lara, Julian Slater and Alfie Manthorpe coming away with gold medals and fastest times of the day. 2017 was no different with some great performances all-round.
Under 11 Boys – First year Elliot Reed ran the first leg running extremely well bringing the team home in 14th out of the 34 teams taking place …. Handing over to Team mate and training partner Fletch Wild who is also bottom end of this age group. Again running really well held onto 15th place passing on to City of Sheffield’s 3rd leg runner. These boys will be back next year much stronger looking to get amongst the medals especially if a certain Will Platts gets involved.
Under 13 Boys – Adam Hirst ran the very fast first leg for the ‘A’ team running really well coming home in 9th place. This proved how fast this first leg was as Adam’s time was the 10th fastest time of the whole race. Jamie Rhodes was running the 3rd leg for the ‘A’ team taking over in 5th place. Jamie worked really hard and brought the team home in 4th place. If Jamie would have been slightly closer to 3rd from the of I think Jamie would have caught him. Well done Boys great effort. Zak Ferguson was running the first leg for the ‘B’ Team and had probably his best race to date coming home in 12th out of the 43 teams on the first leg. Zak’s time was the second fastest out of the City of Sheffield runners so will have booked his place in the ‘A’ team for the Nationals. (Zak still has next year in this age group). Joesph Close was running third leg for the ‘B’ team and after an easy week ran well to bring his team home in 13th place out of the 36 complete teams.
Under 15 Girls – Esther Rowe-Towle was running first leg against a very good field. A few of the girls had run for England last year over cross country. We knew Esther was in great shape after working really hard over the last few months. Running with the leading 3 runners until about 800m to go Esther put a great effort in on one of the hills to pull away and bring her team home in 1st place by seven seconds. This puts Esther in good stead for the rest of the cross country season especially as she gets stronger the further the distance. Esther’s time was good enough for 2nd fastest of the day missing out on been fastest by just 1 second.
Under 17 Girls – Cyane Robinson was running the 2nd leg for Rotherham Harriers. Taking over in 7th place Cyane ran sensibly and worked her way through the field to bring the team up to 4th place giving Rotherham’s very strong last runner a great chance. Cyanes final time was good enough for 6th fastest of the day which is not bad going for a specialist 800m runner. Her team eventually finished in 3rd place overall.
