The weather was really testing for these Championships with several young athletes dropping out throughout the age groups. We had seven of our athletes running with Team Russell winning three age groups in the girls races Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17.

Under 13 Girls – This was the performance of the day for me. Issy Waugh (Hallamshire Harriers) came away the winner by 13 seconds in a very competitive field where I am sure 4 or 5 of these girls will be challenging for Yorkshire medals in January. What made this win more impressive was Issy had a operation at the beginning of November and had only had two sessions back before the race. We wasn’t going to race but with a good session on Thursday we decided to give it a go.

Under 15 Girls – Annie Naylor (Hallamshire Harriers) had a very busy weekend and was running tired today after an excellent silver medal the previous day at the English Schools Cup. Annie came away a comfortable winner and will now have a tough few weeks before gong into the Yorkshires with the target of a top 3 place. Rebecca Evans (City of Sheffield & Dearne) like Annie also had a busy weekend and wasn’t going to run here after yesterdays race and coming down with a cold. Rebecca gave it her all as usual and came away with the Bronze medal. Bobbie Waugh (Hallamshire Harriers) struggled in the mud and wind today and was below par finishing in 9th place. I am sure by the time the Yorkshires come around Bobbie will be ready to challenge a top 8 place.

Under 17 Girls – Shen Wigfield-Turner (Hallamshire Harriers) had a great weekend setting a personal best over 600 metres the previous day and then battled the wind and mud here to come away with the Gold Medal. Not Shen’s best surface to run on but we chatted about doing certain Cross Country races a few months ago for one reason and one reason only. Well done Shen keep working hard.

Under 13 Boys – George Wallace (City of Sheffield & Dearne) had a solid run working his way through the field to finish 5th place and training partner Elliot Reed (City of Sheffield & Dearne) after a slight niggle the last few weeks showed he was over it with a 7th place finish. Both Boys like the girls will now target the Yorkshire Championships in the New Year.

Well done Everyone …….
