A great turn out here with 9 of our athletes taking part – This was probably our best ever Championships winning 4 out of the 8 races. A special mention goes to Emily Simpson who qualified for her 9th English Schools Championships. Emily has only missed one English Schools Championships in the last 5 years and this was due to illness. Emily had been picked to compete but had to turn it down due to a serious illness. This summer will hopefully see Emily go to her 10th English Schools Championships before she starts uni in September.

Year 7 Boys – Zak Ferguson who is having an outstanding season carried this on here with a convincing win. Leading from the start Zak always looked in control and came away a clear winner. It’s a shame Year 7’s can’t go to the English Schools as Zak would have fancied his chances in the Year 8/9 race.

Year 7 Girls – Rebecca Evans who just recently joined Team Russell over the last couple of months had an excellent run to finish in 6th overall. I am looking forward to working with Rebecca towards the track season as I see Rebecca more of a middle distance runner. Good friend and training partner who has come on leaps and bound since joining Team Russel a few months ago finished in 11th place. Isabelle Chapman closely followed Alice home in 13th place. Well done girls great effort.

Year 8/9 Boys – Adam Hirst who has had a few results go against him this Cross Country Season came here and meant business. After a good solid few weeks of training I was confidant Adam would finish in the top 3 here. Going of harder than usual Adam held it together and got stronger as the race went on and came home in 1st place after a good tussle with a very good Sheffield runner. Adam still has next year in the age group so looking very promising for next year.

Year 8/9 Girls – Annie Naylor who was under the weather today did what she had to do. Taking the lead early on and never looked back to finish a clear leader and book her place on the coach to her first English Schools Championships. Annie spent all afternoon in bed not feeling great and has missed the last 2 days training. Polly Platts who has worked so hard over the last 6 months would never have thought 6 months she would be going to the English Schools with still another year in the same age group. Although not at her best today Polly finished in 7th place and booked her place on the team for her first English Schools Championships. Well done girls great running.

Year 12/13 Girls – Cyane Robinson who is also having a great season on her least favourite surface did what she had to do. Although not feeling great today Cyane came away with the win and book her place on that coach also. Cyane willput in a good solid block of training now and hopefully finish in the top 20 at the English Schools.  Emily Simpson ran well and finished in 4th place and as said early goes to her 9th English Schools. Although not Emily’s main priority she knows the strength will put her in good stead for a great track season. These two girls are working really hard on their endurance and are very excited for the track season where both will target some fast times over 800/1500m.

It was a shame Jamie Rhodes and Esther Rowe-Towle were unable to compete due to injuries and I am pretty sure both would have qualified. Both are on the mend and will be ready for the Track Season.
