A great turn out here for Team Russell with our athletes representing either Rotherham, Sheffield and Barnsley. The top 8 athletes of each age group would be chosen to go on and represent South Yorkshire at the English Schools Championships which is a great achievement if chosen to do so. We had seven athletes chosen to go on and represent South Yorkshire which will take place in Leeds on the 17th March.
Junior Girls – This race includes girls from years 8 and 9. A very strong field here for this age group and would be tough to make the team. Annie Naylor who has struggled to train during January due to illnesses is slowly getting back to her best which showed here with a convincing win 22 seconds ahead of second place. Polly Platts set of aggressively which she is getting better at doing and becoming more confident which helped here and came away with 7th place enough to book herself on the coach to the English Schools also. (Annie was very happy). First year Rebecca Evans who has struggled with a niggle in January but like Annie is getting back to her best and has started training again over the last two weeks finished in 8th place and joined Annie and Polly to be selected for the team. Katie Smith also ran really well in this race to finish in 11th place.
Junior Boys – This race includes boys in years 8 and 9. Year 8 Zak Ferguson ran really well and is coming in to great shape at the right time. After his great run last weekend at the Northern Championships Zak continued this here to finish 3rd place overall and qualify for his first English Schools Championships. Jamie Rhodes who has been running really well since the new year and had a great chance of joining Zak on the Team. Jamie did exactly as we planned and came away with a 6th place finish only 8 seconds behind 3rd place. Jamie will join Zak on the Junior Boys team and his first English Schools Championships also. Adam Hirst who had been of school all week had been running really well and had a great chance of making that team also. The illness unfortunately didn’t allow this and Adam finish in 14th place.
Inter Girls – This race is for girls in Year 10 and 11. Esther Rowe-Towle who’s season couldn’t really get any better continued this here with a convincing win. Esther is now looking forward to her last two races of the cross country season. The UK inter counties and then English Schools Championships where she will look to mix it up with the countries best runners and who knows (she knows what I am talking about).
Senior Girls – This race see’s girl from Year 12 and 13. Cyane Robinson who has had a really tough 3 weeks. Cyane was unable to run all last week due to an on going calf problem but was given the go ahead to run here at 80 %. This was enough to see Cyane qualify for what will be here 5th English Schools Championships. If we can get on top of the calf problem and get in a good block of training leading up to the Championship should see Cyane mix it up with the countries best runner. Cyane finished 39th at this race last year after blacking out half way through the race and not remember the second half and ended up in the medical tent afterwards. Well done Cyane after the last three 3 weeks of problems.
Year 7 Boys Race – This is a separate race and doesn’t qualify you for the English Schools Championships. George Wallace who is improving every week showed that here with an excellent run to finish in 3rd place. Well done to Ben Naylor who represented Sheffield and finished 23rd place.
Excellent results everyone keep working hard and bring on the English Schools Championships.
