One of my favourite cross country races of the year. A great course for watching and this year unlike many in the past conditions were good underfoot. This was our best ever championships with 2 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals and 1 Bronze medal with a further two athletes making the top 8 and selection for the Yorkshire Team at the Inter Counties.
Under 15 Girls : Again another strong field in this age group. Holly Brewster (Longwood Harriers) wasn’t sure if she was going to make this Cross Country season but with the help of the physio after a hip injury and slowly getting back in to the training over the last four weeks we are getting into great shape. The plan was to go straight to the front with Annie and control the race. The girls did just this and built up a gap. Running neck and neck all the way round until the final 200 metres where Holly put in a burst and managed to open up a gap on Annie and come away with Gold Medal. This is just the start for Holly another few months and we should be good to go at the English Schools Cross Country Championships. Next up the Northern Cross Country Championships in two weeks where Holly will target a top 5 place. Annie Naylor (Hallamshire Harriers) had a plan and that was to break the field up straight from the start as she knew Holly would finish very fast. Annie couldn’t quite shake Holly of and finished in the Silver medal position. Annie will now get her head down for a few months. This girl is so determined so expect some more excellent results later in the year. Well done girls an excellent 1st and 2nd. Rebecca Evans (City of Sheffield & Dearne) had an outside chance of making the Yorkshire team. We planned to take a gamble early on and get in with the second group that were chasing Holly and Annie. She did exactly this and hung on well towards the end to finish an excellent 8th place and gain her first Yorkshire vest. Well done Rebecca excellent running with still another year in this age group. The girls were backed up by Bobbie Waugh (Sheffield Tri Club) who finished in 19th who again still has another year in the age group and Polly Platts (Hallamshire Harriers) who finished 31st. Polly was part of the Hallamshire Harriers Team that finished in Bronze medal position.
Under 15 Boys : Zak Ferguson (Rotherham Harriers) has had his own problems this last few months with growing pains and niggles. A solid 5 weeks under our belt Zak is about 80 percent fit and with his determination to compete wanted to give it a good go here. An excellent run to finish in 10th place with still another year in the age group and was just over 10 seconds of getting in the Yorkshire team. Zak was part of the Rotherham Harriers Team that finished Silver medal position. Watch out for Zak this summer. If we can stay injury free those Team Russell records over 800 and 1500 metres will be under threat. Jamie Rhodes (City of Sheffield & Dearne) who mixes his running with hockey had a solid run here to finish in 28th out of the 48 complete runners.
Well done everyone …..
