06/05/2019 – Grimsby Open Meeting

A great turn out for Team Russell at a very cold, wet and windy Grimsby open meeting that we have supported for several years. We had 15 of athletes taking part in a number of different events. The weather didn’t stop a great day out and some excellent performances. There were 4 new Team Russell records and lots of personal best.

Records :

Under 9 girl Neve Connelly is definitely want to watch in the future. Neve made the final of the 80 metres and went on to finish 2nd and in doing so broke her own record. Neve is still only in Year 2 so has next year in this age group. Isabelle Reed went in the 1 lap race (400 metres) for the first time and ran extremely well just missing out on a medal finishing in 4th place setting a new record. Isabelle also set a new personal best in the 80 metres. Harry Atkinson had an extremely busy day setting a new record in the Under 15 Boys Long Jump getting towards the distances we know he is capable of. Harry then went on to set new personal best in both the 100 metres and 200 metres.
A special mention to Ella Kynoch who set a huge personal best in the Under 15 Girls Discus beating her own record – Going over 30 metres for the first time in round 3 was a great achievement but it didn’t stop there. In round 4 we decided to take a gamble with a few things we have been trying in training. It paid of and the Discus went out to 32.19 metres which now ranks Ella 3rd in the UK rankings. More work to do over the next 6 weeks now to get ready for the English Schools Championships where we hope to mix it with the countries best throwers.  Ella then went on to set a new outdoor personal best in the Shot Putt.

Personal Best :

Well done everyone that set new personal best on the day in far from ideal conditions. Under 9 Scarlett Reed set a new personal best in the 80 metres and made the final but unfortunately had a fall and didn’t finish the final. Under 11 Olivia Russell set a new personal best in the 80 metres and just missed out by 0.1 of making the final. Molly Gray first year Under 13 is flying at the moment and had a storming run in the 200 metres to finish 2nd overall. New comer Lilly Hughes won the 100 metres and set a big personal best and came close to the Team Russell record. Lilly is first year of this age group so expect quite a few records to go her way over the next few years. I am excited to see just how quick we can go after a hard winter. Under 13 Boy George Seymour set a personal best in the 100 metres making the final and just missing out on a medal by 0.1. George Taylor had a cracking run in the Under 13 Boys 800 metres finishing in 3rd place overall setting a big personal best.

Well done to James Wainwright, Ben Morton, Elliot Reed, George Wallace and George Connelly who all came close to their personal best. James picked up three trophies on the day, Ben coming away with two, George Wallace picked up 1 and George Connelly came away with two Golds winning both the 100 metres and Long Jump.

A great day well done everyone. Bring on the Yorkshires next weekend now.
