British Outdoor University Championships (Bedford)

Emily Simpson went in the 800 metres. After a great indoor season taking a Bronze medal at the BUCS indoor championships. Emily went into these championships with an open mind knowing it would be much tougher competition. The target was to take each round as it came with the hope we could get into the final. Emily had the 13th fastest time on paper so making that final would be a great achievement.

Round 1 – The target here was to do as little as possible and finish in the top 3 so we would make tomorrow’s semi final. Emily did exactly this and eased back with 150 metres to go when the top 3 found themselves clear. Emily crossed the line in 3rd and booked herself a place in the Semi Final.

Semi Final – The target here was to treat this like a final – Emily again stuck to the plan and crossed the line in 3rd place. It was only the top 2 that gained automatic qualification into tomorrow’s Final so we had to sit tight and keep everything crossed the time was quick enough to go through as a fastest loser. Emily’s time was quick enough and we had done what we set out to do and make the final.

Final – Going in to the final with the slowest personal best – But at the indoor championships anything can happen in finals so we went into this thinking we could come away with a medal. A very very slow first lap going through 400 metres in 69 seconds Emily was in a great place and with 250 metres to go the leader had opened up a slight gap but the rest of the field was all in with a chance of making the top 3. Emily dug in and crossed the line in 6th place with a 62 seconds second lap. There was only 1 second that separated 2nd place to Emily’s 6th place. A great achievement. Emily will now run some longer races before targeting some quick times over 800 metres later on in the season.
