British University Indoor Championships – 2019

Emily Simpson went in the 800 metres where there was a big field entered and several girls that had personal best Under 2.10 so was going to be a tough ask to make the final. There were Heats on the Friday, Semi Final on Saturday and Final on Sunday. Our plan was to concentrate on each race individually and make it as easy as we could with the hope we could make the final and run the times training is suggesting the shape Emily is in.

Friday – Emily went in heat 2 and did what she needed to do taking control of the race and came away with the win (2.16.47) and booked her place in the semi final.

Saturday – Emily went in the 3rd semi final of 3. With only the first person across the line to qualify for the final we knew we had to run this like a final and go for the win as didn’t want to take any chance of a fastest losers place to the final. Up against a girl who had a personal best and seasons best better than Emily. The plan was to follow and if we had anything left in the final 100 metres to push on. This is exactly what Emily did and tried to get around with 100 metres to go but couldn’t quite get passed and left it until the final 20 metres before finally getting passed to come away with the win (2.12.31) and book her place in the final.

Sunday – Going in to the final Emily had the slowest season’s best so we had to come up with a plan and stick with it. The plan was to go to the back of the field until 400 metres which was passed in 67.0 seconds for Emily as the leaders went through in 65.89 seconds. Next plan was to hit the 3rd 200 metres as hard as she could. The next 200 was done in a very impressive 31 seconds taking Emily from the back of the field into 4th place right behind 3rd place. Now realising there was a chance of a medal with just over 100 metres to go Emily went in to 3rd place and hung on very well to cross the line in the Bronze medal position and came away with a personal best (2.10.10). The second 400 metres was done in a very impressive 63.10 seconds. A big step forward for Emily with still much more to come as the training sessions are suggesting week in week out. Next step is this weekend’s National Under 20 Championships.

Well done Emily a great achievement ….
