English Schools Championships

The biggest event of the year which every Junior athlete thrives to be part of. We had three athletes this year qualifying and two athletes coming very close to qualifying times/distances. Emily Simpson (1500m – Senior Girls), Cyane Robinson (1500m -Senior Girls) and Esther Rowe Towle (3000m – Inter Girls). Ella Kynoch came very close in the Junior girls Discus who still has next year in the age group and Harry Roffey came close in the Inter Boys 800 metres.

Day one – Heats of the Senior Girls 1500 metres.

Emily Simpson was going to her last and 10th English Schools championships in the shape of her life setting personal best in 400, 800 and 1500 metres this year. Going in Heat one which as expected was very slow going through 800 metres in 2.33 mins. The pace didn’t really pick up until 350 metres to go where Emily got boxed in and lost 5/6 metres on the front 4 athletes. Working hard to get back to them but there just wasn’t enough time and Emily finished in 6th place. With one Heat to go we just had to sit and hope Emily would make it through as a fastest loser. Unfortunately the next heat was slightly quicker and Emily missed out by one place to make it through to the final. The end of an era for Emily now but what a Journey it has been over the last 6 years. Making the final once and missing out twice by just one place. Well done Emily ….. Cyane went in heat 2 and was no fastest through 800 metres in 2.32 mins. Again the pace didn’t really pick up until 200 metres to go and Cyane followed every move finishing a comfortable 2nd and progressed to tomorrows final.

Day Two – Final of Senior Girls 1500 metres and Inter Girls 3000 metres.

Esther Rowe Towle went in the inter girls 3000 metres. It was a great achievement Esther was on the start line after the stress fracture and struggling with niggles for the last 2 months. We knew it would be tough going – Esther although disappointed afterwards after finishing in 13th place she will look back on this and realise what a great achievement it was. Still next year in the same age group so watch this space.

Cyane went into the final confidant after a good qualifying round. Sitting at the back of the group but following every move as we planned. Again a very slow first 800 metres going through in 2.31 mins this time which kind of played in to Cyane’s hands. No one really wanting to take the lead until 300 metres to go where Cyane was still in 5th place. Moving through the field with 200 metres to go going into 3rd place and with 80 metres to go pushed on hard and managed to finish a superb 2nd place. This really makes up for a disappointing season last year after the stress fracture. Believe it or not this was only Cyane’s 5th ever 1500 metre race. Now to chase some fast times the rest of the season for the girls. Well done Cyane ……
