English Schools Cross Country Championships

The last race of the cross country season which saw five of our athletes taking part – Three of our athletes were taking part in their first ever English Schools and I am sure will be back at many more in the coming years. Emily Simpson was taking part in her last ever English Schools Cross Country Championships making this her 9th in total and hopefully will make it 10 come the summer – What an achievement …….

Junior Boys – Adam Hirst was making his first appearance at an English Schools. Adam was first out of the pen but found the start very tough. Adam went on to finish 254th out of the 346 runners taking part. Adam was 4th South Yorkshire runner home. This was a great experience and with still next year in this age group Adam will be back next year.

Junior Girls – Annie Naylor did exactly what I asked and got out really hard. This is the kind of race if you don’t get out hard its a real struggle to work your way through the field with 350 runners taking part and the course only been narrow. Holding her own against the countries best runners with still next year in this age group Annie went on to finish in 48th place (5th Yorkshire runner and 12th in the North of England). We haven’t had the best preparation over the last 3 weeks so this was for me and excellent performance. This is how close these races are another 10 seconds and Annie would have finished in 27th place. Annie has already said she is looking forward to working hard and challenging towards the front of the field next year. Training partner Polly Platts also had a great run. Finding the start tough as Polly was 7th in the pen but she got out hard and finished in 230th out of the 342 runners. Again just showing how close these races are 4 other people ran the same time as Polly and 5 girls in front all ran the same time only 1 second in front. Polly also has next year in this age group so will be back next year I am sure of it. If we would have said 6 months ago to Polly or her parents you will be at the English Schools they wouldn’t have believed it. A great achievement well done girls.

Senior Girls – After last weekends great run at the Inter Counties Cyane was confidant of a good run here. Sticking to what we had planned Cyane went out very hard and at half way was in 13th place looking very good. It was at this point Cyane as what she describes it as a black out and can’t remember the second half of the race. As Cyane went over the finishing line she collapsed and had to be carried in to the Emergency tent. Cyane then doesn’t remember the next 30 mins and couldn’t even remember her name. Although extremely disappointed Cyane still managed to finish in 39th place out of the 323 runners (4th Yorkshire runner and 11th in the North of England). The team also finished in 2nd place overall. With Still next year in the age group Cyane will be back ….. Next step warm weather training to get ready for the track season. Emily Simpson was competing in her last ever English Schools Cross Country Championships. Plan was to go out hard and hang on for as long as she could. Doing exactly that and running really well to come home in 63rd place (5th Yorkshire runner and 20th in the North of England). An extremely good run for Emily as she finds the mud and hills very hard. Cyane was also part of the Team that finished in 2nd overall. Emily’s last 400m was extremely fast which bodes well for some super quick times on the track this summer. Lets make it 10 English Schools this summer.

Well done everyone ….. Keep working hard …. Next year I predict we will have 10 athletes competing here.
