Northern Cross Country Relays – 19/10/2019

This is one of my favourite events of the year. We have had some great success at this meeting in recent years and this year didn’t disappoint either.

Under 15 Girls – Annie Naylor went in the Hallamshire Harriers ‘A’ team. It was the same trio as last year that came away with the win. This year all three girls were top age and after a great track season from all the girls they were going to be tough to beat. Annie was on the second leg this year and took over in 5th place. With this race been much shorter than the cross country races our plan was to go out much harder than usual. Annie did just that and had got herself into first place before half way round. Handing over to her team mate with a 20 seconds lead over second place. The team came home in first place and matched last years performance. Annie was 5th fastest time of the day which was pretty impressive as for half of the 2,000 metre loop Annie was running by herself. The girls will now go in the Nationals in a few weeks time hoping to get amongst the medals. Polly Platts had a good solid run for the Hallamshire Harriers ‘C’ team and finished an impressive 14th place out of the 47 complete teams.

Under 17 Girls – Neve Hardcastle went on the first leg for Longwood Harriers. A very tough first leg with the first two girls running the quickest and second quickest of the day. Neve ran extremely well and looked really strong throughout coming back in 3rd place. Unfortunately Longwood didn’t have a complete team. Neve’s overall time was the 5th fastest on the day and still has next year in this age group. A few more hard months now before the Yorkshire’s and Northern’s in January. Shen Wigfield-Turner went on the third leg for Hallamshire Harriers ‘A’ Team. Shen had a big nightmare at this race last year so the plan was to make amends for this. We had a plan as we knew the team would be in with a chance of a medal. Shen stuck to exactly what we had talked about when we had a walk round the course. Bringing the team home in Bronze medal position Shen had done all I asked of her. Still new to the different training approach I see much more to come from Shen with the main target been the track season 2020.

Under 15 Boys – Zak Ferguson went for Rotherham Harriers ‘B’ Team on the first leg. A tough 6 months for Zak with injuries. We have managed to get about 3/4 weeks of training together now but still only at 80 percent of where we need to be. A very tough first leg Zak set of with intentions going of very hard. An excellent run, Zak faded slightly in the final 300 metres but this was expected due to the very little training we have managed to do over the last 6 months. Zak brought his Rotherham team back in 11th place with his time been the 16th fastest of the day. A big step forward today so hopefully a good few months ahead of us now and Zak will be ready for the bigger races in the new year and show everyone what he is capable of. Adam Hirst, Jamie Rhodes and George Kriel Parr went for the City of Sheffield & Dearne ‘A’ Team. All boys ran well to finish 17th out of the 32 complete teams. Adam Hirst 8.00 mins, Jamie Rhodes 7.56 and George Kriel Parr 8.09 mins. Well done boys …..
