A great turn out from our team with some great performances. We had nine personal best and one Team Russell record out of the 13 athletes competing.
Personal Best :
Will Platts (City of Sheffield & Dearne) went in the 800 metres. Will is in great shape and after his first race in Doncaster a few weeks ago where he just failed to go under 2.20 I knew it would only take one more race to break that barrier. Sticking to the plan and going through 400 metres in target time. Will then pushed on with 300 metres to go and finished very strong and came home in a new personal best (2.18). This now ranks Will 1st in Yorkshire and 3rd in England for the 2020 rankings. However this wasn’t a Team Russell record but did move Will from 3rd to 2nd on the all time list. One more race to see if he can get close to Zak’s very impressive 2.17 Team Russell record.
Elliot English (City of Sheffield & Dearne) went in the 800 metres also. Again Elliot stuck to his plan and went out harder than usual and worked hard on the second lap and was rewarded with a four second personal best. A little more concentration mid race and Elliot will go under 2.30. Elliot’s new personal best ranks him 5th in the Yorkshire rankings for 2020.
Annabelle Sibley (Hallamshire Harriers) like the boys went in the 800 metres. Again Annabelle ran a few weeks ago in Doncaster and wasn’t far of her personal best there. Training over the last few months has been suggesting there was a big personal best if we got things right on the day. We had a plan and Annabelle stuck to it. A little bit of a gamble over that first 500 metres is exactly what Annabelle did and you could see she meant business. Finding herself way out in front and was more like a time trial. Annabelle dug hard the last 200 metres and was rewarded with a 6 seconds personal best and came very close to going under 2.30 and who knows with a little more competition. This time was good enough to go 2nd on the very impressive all time Team Russell rankings behind Emily Simpson. The time ranks Annabelle 5th in Yorkshire and 24th in the England rankings for 2020.
Grace Igoe (Hallamshire Harriers) also went in the 800 metres. A different plan for Grace as she usually likes to go out really hard and try and hang on towards the end. We decided to sit in today and try and finish much stronger than the previous two races. The plan worked and Grace was dragged around by much older athletes to a 3 second personal best (2.31). What makes this impressive is Grace still has another year in this age group and with Emily’s record 2.29 this will be under threat next year. The time ranks Grace 5th on the all time Team Russell rankings. Grace is ranked 7th in Yorkshire and 32nd in the England rankings for 2020.
Well done everyone keep working hard and bring on that Cross Country Season …..
