Issy Waugh is having a great season and was hoping to continue the form here. Being third in the pen meant she was going to struggle getting out with the leading group. As predicted Issy did get caught up at the start and struggled to get going and was in the 50’s at the half way point. A tough challenging course gave Issy enough time to work her way through the field and was passing people right up until the finish line. Finishing a superb 11th place and only 8 seconds away from 6th place which with a good start would have been well within her capability. Remember Issy still has next year in this year age. Well done on a first season of being able to run in the big championships.
Under 13 Boys :
Will Platts was right at the back of the pen so was going to be a very tough ask to make the top half of the field and to make things worse Will lost his spike at the beginning of the race so ran the whole way with just one spike on. Sticking to the task of getting out as hard as he could from where he was and working his way through the field right up to the finish. Will is in excellent shape so did it surprise me when half way round the field he had passed lots of runners. No not at all it didn’t surprise me. Like Issy Will was passing people right up to the finish line and finished a superb 54th. I bet he was the first finisher from the last 2 people in the pens. Watch out for Will and Issy next year as both have another year. Onto the track now to see if Will can challenge those Team Russell records.

Annie Naylor hadn’t raced since the Yorkshire’s so was a little race rusty as she will tell you. Annie worked hard all the way round to finish a very respectable 34th. It shows how close these races are as another 10 seconds would have made the top 20 finish. Annie said to me I needed that race before next weekend’s English Schools so watch out for her in Liverpool. Annie was 3rd Yorkshire counter so came away with a Team Silver medal. Holly Brewster also had a solid run to finish in 43rd place and was Yorkshire’s 4th counter which meant she also came away with the Team Silver medal. Slightly disappointed after as the target was the top 30 but when we look how close she was to that only 10 seconds Holly smiled and said bring on the English Schools next weekend.
Under 17 Ladies :
Neve Hardcastle was ill for a few weeks and had only just really got back in to training the last 10 days so missed a good block of training leading up to these Championships. After such a good start to the Cross Country season Yorkshires and Northerns Neve was disappointed with today where she struggled the second half of the race and finished in 69th place. The 4th Yorkshire counter home and the team just missed out on a medal to finish in 4th place. English Schools next weekend for Neve then she is excited to see how fast she can go this summer over 800 metres, 1500 metres and maybe a few 3000 metres.
Under 20 Ladies :
Cyane Robinson has also had a great Cross Country season. Tough course and tough conditions would suit Cyane but even Cyane found the last mile very tough on the zapping course. An 18th place at last weekend’s national but went one better here and finished a superb 13th and was part of the Yorkshire Team that brought home the gold medal. Well done a great season : Yorkshire’s 1st, Northern’s 5th, BUCS 40th and Nationals 18th. Bring on the track season and hopefully we will see some new personal best over 800 metres and 1500 metres.
