A busy weekend with lots of personal best and a few Team Russell records. Almost half way through the season now and with only a few weeks left now until the pinnacle of the season the English Schools Track and Field Championships. It’s been a great year so far, let’s make sure the second half of the season is as good as the first.
Team Russell Records :
First year Under 15 Ben Morton (Hallamshire Harriers) is working hard in training and is getting much stronger and faster. This showed here with a big personal best in the Long Jump and ran extremely well in the 200 metres getting to within .1 of his personal best with little preparation. Harry Atkinson (City of Sheffield & Dearne) went in his first ever Multi events competition in York. Harry had been injured for the last few weeks but wanted to give it a go here and acquitted himself here very well. A big personal best in the High Jump was enough to beat his own record set at the beginning of the year. I was also impressed with Harry’s big personal best over 800 metres of no training at all for this event. Holly Fowler (Hallamshire Harriers) was also competing in her first ever multi event competition and like Harry had a great few days. Holly equalled the Long Jump record on tired legs on the second day of competition so expect Holly to improve this further on fresh legs. Holly also set an outdoor personal best in the High Jump.
Personal Best :
James Wainwright (City of Sheffield & Dearne) had a busy weekend. Setting a big personal best in the Long Jump to go number 2 on the all time list. James also set personal best at the same meeting in the 100 metres and Discus. Khalid Edwards (Hallamshire Harriers) set a best in the Under 15 Boys Long Jump. George Wallace (City of Sheffield & Dearne) ran well in the 1500 metres at the Youth Development League to set a new personal best. Elliot Reed (City of Sheffield & Dearne) was in the same race and set a big personal best by over three seconds to finish just behind George. Elliot also helped the team out and set a personal best in the Javelin. Holly Brewster (Longwood Harriers) front ran a personal best in the 1500 metres and won by over 100 metres. Holly is in great shape at the moment so once we get in to a faster race with people around her expect to see a big improvement on her personal best. At the same meeting an hour before the 1500 metres Holly set a personal best over 300 metres.
Well done also to Emily Simpson who was competing at the England Championships in Bedford over 800 metres. Going in the second heat the plan was to sit in and follow the leaders and hopefully we could get in the top two or at least finish in 3rd to give us a chance of making the final. Emily did exactly as what we had planned but unfortunately no one wanted to take the race on so the first lap was passed in 69 seconds. This was now going to be a tough ask to qualify as one of the fastest losers. With two girls who had run quicker then Emily this season it was a burn up over the final 300 metres and although Emily managed a 62 seconds final lap it was only good enough for 3rd overall and unfortunately didn’t make the final. Well done Emily a great effort. A block of hard training now and hopefully will make the British Senior Championships at the end of the year and more personal best.
Well done to everyone else who competed this weekend also …..
