Yorkshire Cross Country Championships has always been a great event for Team Russell and 2018 didn’t disappoint with it been our best championships to date ……
Under 13 Girls – Annie Naylor who is having a excellent season so far went in to the race with a very good chance of making the top 8 and getting selected for the Yorkshire team at the inter counties later in the year. The plan was to go of harder than previous races and she did exactly that …. Getting stronger as the race went on Annie finished an excellent 2nd place. Annie was also part of the Gold medal winning Hallamshire Harriers team. Training partner and friend Polly Platts who is also having a big break through this season ran extremely well and finished in 17th place overall out of the 85 finishes. Polly was part of the Hallamshire Harriers ‘B’ team that finished in 5th place.
Under 13 Boys – This was always going to be a very close race and we knew our three boys all had a great chance of making the top 8 and making that Yorkshire team. Jamie Rhodes who set of fairly conservative worked his way through the field and finished very strongly to bring home the individual Bronze medal. Zak Ferguson had an excellent race. Doing as we told him Zak went of hard and held it together really well and finished a superb 4th place only just been pipped on the line by training partner Jamie. Zak still has another year in this age group. Adam Hirst ran really well and was always with the lead group and in with a chance of making the Yorkshire Team. It came down to the final 200m and Adam was just outrun and finished in 10th place only 3 seconds away from making the Team. Jamie and Zak were part of the City of Sheffield Team that finished in 2nd place overall.
Under 17 Ladies – Cyane Robinson who finished 4th place last year was determined to come away with a medal this year. After suffering a stress fracture last winter Cyane has worked really hard to get fit again. Always in the top 3 from the start Cyane finished the race really strongly and came away with a silver medal and was also part of the Rotherham Harriers Team that came away with the Gold Medal. Not bad for a 800m specialist bring on the track season.
Under 20 Ladies – It was great to see Emily Simpson racing again after a long lay of with injury/illness. Emily stepped up to the Under 20 age group for the first time. Again like Cyane, Emily is concentrating more on 800m/1500m so this was going to be a big ask as the race was 6300m but we are doing this as preparation for the track season. Doing exactly as planned Emily finished strongly on the last lap of three to finish in 5th place and yet again get her place on the Yorkshire team for the Inter Counties. Bring on that track season where Emily will target some fast times over 800m.
Well done everyone ….
