One of my favourite cross country races of the year. A great course for watching and this year unlike many in the past conditions were good underfoot. This was our best ever championships with 2 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals and 1 Bronze medal with a further two athletes making the top 8 and selection for the Yorkshire Team at the Inter Counties.
Under 17 Ladies : Neve Hardcastle (Longwood Harriers) is in great shape and after a superb run at the Liverpool Cross Challenge our target was to make the top 5 here and anything else a bonus. The plan was to follow the leaders until a certain point and then if feeling good take a gamble and push on. Coming in to the second lap Neve was in second quite a distance behind the leader. Half way round the second lap Neve found an extra gear and worked her way back to the leader and even at one point opened up a slight lead. Again this race was going to come down to the final 200 metres and Neve couldn’t quite hang on to the lead and finished an excellent second place only 2 seconds behind the eventual winner. Neve still has next year in this age group. Next up for Neve is a race in Sterling (Scotland) where she has been picked to represent the North of England. Excellent running well done.
Under 20 Ladies :
Cyane Robinson (Rotherham Harriers) isn’t quite in the shape we would have hoped for but decided to give it a go here to see where she is and what we need to work on leading in to the bigger races. A move to university in York where Cyane has settled well but will admit has been partying a little too much this first term. She now promises me she will get her head down and get in to a routine. The plan was to go of steady on the first of 3 long laps and work our way through the field. Cyane did exactly this and finished with a very fast last lap coming home with a Gold medal which makes it two in a row at these championships. Next up for Cyane will be the Northern Championships in two weeks time. Well done a solid start to your Cross Country season.
